Agencia de noticias cooperativa, la más antigua y extensa de EE.UU. y del mundo.

Sus comienzos se remontan a 1848, cuando seis diarios de la ciudad de Nueva York aunaron esfuerzos para financiar una distribución telegráfica de noticias extranjeras llegadas por barcos a Boston. En 1892, la moderna AP fue organizada según las leyes de Illinois; varios años después se trasladó a Nueva York. Un juicio federal antimonopolios en la década de 1940 puso término a la imposición de restricciones al ingreso de nuevos miembros. La AP fue la primera agencia en dedicar un cable noticioso a la cobertura de deportes (1946) y en distribuir información económica a través de una asociación con Dow Jones & Co., Inc. Más de 15.000 organizaciones del mundo obtienen noticias, fotografías e ilustraciones de la agencia. El Manual de estilo de la AP se ha transformado en el estándar de muchas organizaciones periodísticas.
